Hospital visit

Mom went into ER today for some severe kidney pain. The CT scan shows a blockage and requires she be admitted to the hospital tonight for a procedure in the morning.

This is all I know so far. Will keep you posted as we learn more.

What has happened to us? Despite the most advanced medical technology in the world, we are sicker than ever by nearly every measure.

Two out of every three of us are overweight. Cases of diabetes are exploding, especially amongst our younger population. About half of us are taking at least one prescription drug. Major medical operations have become routine, helping to drive health care costs to astronomical levels. Heart disease, cancer and stroke are the country’s three leading causes of death, even though billions are spent each year to “battle” these very conditions. FORKS OVER KNIVES examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting animal-based and processed foods. Dr. Campbell, a nutritional scientist at Cornell University, was concerned in the late 1960′s with producing “high quality” animal protein to bring to the poor and malnourished areas of the third world. While in the Philippines, he made a life-changing discovery: the country’s wealthier children, who were consuming relatively high amounts of animal-based foods, were much more likely to get liver cancer. Dr. Esselstyn, a top surgeon and head of the Breast Cancer Task Force at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic, found that many of the diseases he routinely treated were virtually unknown in parts of the world where animal-based foods were rarely consumed.

These discoveries inspired Campbell and Esselstyn, who didn’t know each other yet, to conduct several groundbreaking studies. One of them took place in China and is still among the most comprehensive health-related investigations ever undertaken. Their research led them to a startling conclusion: degenerative diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even several forms of cancer, could almost always be prevented – and in many cases reversed – by adopting a whole-food, plant-based diet. Despite the profound implications of their findings, their work has remained relatively unknown to the public.

The filmmakers travel with Drs. Campbell and Esselstyn on their separate but similar paths, from their childhood farms where they both produced “nature’s perfect food,” to China and Cleveland, where they explored ideas that challenged the established thinking and shook their own core beliefs.

The idea of food as medicine is put to the test. Throughout the film, cameras follow “reality patients” who have chronic conditions from heart disease to diabetes. Doctors teach these patients how to adopt a whole-food, plant-based diet as the primary approach to treat their ailments – while the challenges and triumphs of their journeys are revealed.

Unclear Margins

Mom's visit with the oncologist today was a surprise. We were all expecting more chemotherapy.

Instead we received other news. First I do want to let you know that as long as there's something "to do" there's a chance that she can fight this thing. We're taking the positive approach. Are you sitting down? The surgeon and oncologist agree that additional surgery is needed. This will not take place until she's healed from the most recent surgery. The reason has everything to do with the margins not being cleared from the removal of the cancerous nodules. So they feel she will have a better chance of staying ahead of this monster if they "clear" the margins. Mom's surgeon is truly one of the best and did already remove more than he felt was necessary, however it just wasn't enough. It's nearly impossible to tell during the time of surgery even with the pathologist in the room taking and testing frozen sections as the surgeon works. We're estimating 6 more weeks of recovery before additional surgery. After the next surgery they will let her heal, rescan and then evaluate for chemotherapy depending on results of the scans.

In 3 years I will have lived in Arizona the same amount of time that I lived in Illinois. Time goes by so quickly and especially as I've gotten older. When I moved away Jenelle was only 8 and little Josh was 6. I never planned on living in Arizona as long as I have but after college it quickly became my new home and a very comfortable place to live for many reasons. I have a wonderful husband of 5 years, a great job of 9 years, a house and 2 beagles. I've learned over the past 15 years that you don't have to be a 30 minute drive away from your family to be close. I love my entire family so much and we've always remained very close. In fact sometimes I feel that I've come to appreciate them even more being further away. We don't take each other for granted and we hold the time that we do get to spend together very precious.

When Mom was diagnosed in 2008 I thought that we needed to move closer no matter what the cost but it's not as easy as one could imagine both physically and mentally. Anyone who has moved far away from their family (and survived) knows what I'm talking about. It's been a very difficult 3 years being so far away from Mom during her fight with cancer. We don't know what the future holds and all that we can do is try to make the best decisions and choices as each day brings it's own set of challenges.

Thank you for being a part of this blog and of our lives. I'm so glad that we started this from Day 1 of Mom's fight and I'm happy to help be a part of this fight in my own little ways.

Pathology Results

Pathology results show the nodules removed are cancer. The name for it is a "Sister Mary Joseph nodule." Next step is to meet with the oncologist to determine if additional chemotherapy is needed. Information about SMJ nodule is posted below. We're grateful this was found and removed but too upset to comment further at this time. It's been a long road, we don't know what the future holds but we're ready to fight and continue, together!

Mom's home already! She sounds great and Jen is there with her tonight. She really wanted to get out of the hospital and is much happier at home. Let the healing begin! Mom has a lot to look forward to so she's definitely mentally prepared herself and probably has a whole list of self motivatived ideas running through her head as I type this. She's just simply amazing! Keep it up Momma! She's so very thankful and blessed for all of your love, support and prayers. You have no idea how much she loves you all! Surgery Day

Mom's in surgery now, they made special arrangements to have the kidney stint and removal of nodules done with both surgeons on the same table. I just got word the stint went in great and Dr. Icaza is starting his procedures. She's such a trooper!

Aunt Barb just talked to Dr. Icaza, he said she did good. The frozen section was inconclusive and there were possibly some abnormal cells but they were not sure. A lot of scar tissue was present as well so they want to wait until they get full pathology back before saying for sure what it is. We should know something by Friday.

They did remove her belly button but it served its purpose well!

Surgical Consultations

Mom met with her surgeon today to discuss options and details regarding removal of the possible cancerous nodules near her navel. Everyone agrees this is the best option for prevention and treatment of our newest enemy. Dr. Icaza did inform her that the navel is an area common for the gastric cancer to spread. Of course he has to provide us with the worst case scenario and won't know for certain until it's removed and tested. If found cancerous the possibility of additional chemotherapy will be discussed. Unfortunately he's suggesting the belly button be removed entirely. Mom has the cutest belly button and I feel rather attached to it of course. No pun intended. No seriously this news totally sucks and the tears are flowing again. She's been through so much and it feels never ending. We're allowed these moments to get mad and shed tears but afterwards we press on and yes, Be Positive! Mom's a fighter and she's strong and wonderful! We can do this! Mom can do this!

Ps. She also met with the urologist who plans to place a stint in the kidney every 3 months beginning as early as next week

SUV means

If you wanted to know what SUV blood pool was, I found this on google.

SUV stands for standard uptake value. In general any lesion seen on the scan with SUV of more than 3 indicates metabolic acidosis activity, that is, it is not scar tissue. It maybe hyper metabolic due to infections, or inflammation or cancer. Higher number means more metabolic acidosis
activity.

I will keep you posted, my appointment with Dr. Icaza is Thursday, 12th at 4pm.

PET Scan Results

PET Scan Results:

There seems to be multiple subcutaneous nodules. The largest of which has increased from 9mm on 99 scan to 13mm on this scan. The lesion has a maximum SUV of 1/8, which is above the blood pool (but not extremely high.) These nodules could be from surgery, small contaminates which the body has encapsulated causing it to increase in size. The good news is that there were no other areas of focal increased metabolic activity noted. So this is contained to the area just next to my navel.

Recommendation:
1. Rescan in 3 months
2. Biopsy, results are not predictable
3. Chemo, extra precaution but not ideal at this time
4. Surgical removal, best option

We all agreed to remove whatever it is, for peace of mind and reduce risk of it spreading, if it does turn out to be cancerous. I will go to surgeon for a consultation as soon as possible. I will also follow up with urologist about the kidney and evaluate to see if a possible stint will be needed. This would be placed at the same time of the surgical removal.

Have you ever wondered if the diseases in our society have a common cause? Many doctors, herbalists, and nutritionists believe that the explanation may come down to two small words:

Acid / Alkaline

High acidity can become a dangerous condition that weakens all major body systems. It makes your internal environment conducive to disease. A pH-balanced environment, on the other hand, allows proper metabolic functioning and gives your body resistance to disease. A healthy body maintains alkaline reserves that are used to meet emergency demands.

pH measures the balance between positively and negatively charged ions in the body fluids, i.e. blood, urine and saliva. A low pH number (below 7) indicates that your body fluid is on the acidic side. A high pH number (above 7) indicates you have alkalinity. A pH of 7.0 is considered neutral; this is the pH of distilled water. This delicate balance can be an important indicator of overall health.

Researchers find that most people are at least slightly "acidic"; their pH is low. If your pH is too acidic, your body borrows minerals - such as calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium - from vital organs and bones to neutralize and remove the acid. Although high acidity may not be outwardly noticeable, it can severely affect overall health in a negative way. Alkalinity in the body is much more rare, but just as potentially serious. It often takes longer for a person who is "alkaline" to achieve balance than one who is "acidic."

Today is Mom's PET scan. We'll get the results January 4th.

What is a PET scan?

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a highly sensitive technology that uses a radioactive substance to show the chemical and functional changes within the body.

Chemical and functional changes cannot be seen by other imaging methods, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT).
A PET scan measures body functions such as blood flow, oxygen use and sugar metabolism to help doctors evaluate how well your child's organs and tissues are functioning.
Images obtained from a PET scan help doctors diagnose a problem, choose the best treatment and/or see how well a treatment is working.
PET scans can be particularly useful when they are digitally combined with the images generated from MRI or CT.
The radiopharmaceutical used is designed to go to the part of the body that is being tested.

A common type of radiopharmaceutical, fluorine-18 FDG (fluorodeoxyglucose), acts almost exactly like sugar.
The body uses sugar for fuel, so the radioactive sugar goes to the parts of the body that are very active, such as the brain, the heart and the muscles.
The PET scanner can "read" any chemical changes within those areas.

Results from Mom's CT scan and the next steps... by Mom

The CT scan showed a change in the kidney as described below:
Since the prior study, left-sided hydronephrosis has developed. There is mild dilatation of the proximal ureter but there is no obstructing mass. The cause of the hydronephrosis is not evident on this exam.
This is a swelling of the kidney, could be caused from a slight kink in the tube going from the kidney to the bladder causing some backup, possibly from surgery. Or if there is a small tumor pushing on this causing an obstruction.

The second thing is the small nodule next to my navel that we have been watching, could be scar tissue from surgery. Explained in the report as follows:
There is a small enhancing mass lesion of subcutaneous tissues of the anterior abdominal just to the left of the umbilicus. This finding is worrisome for a metastatic deposit. On today’s study this measures 1.4 cm.

Everything else was unchanged or normal, thank goodness for that!
Also my scope and colonoscopy I had on Monday looked good. Whew!

Follow up plan:
Submit to insurance co. for a PET scan, this will determine if there are any hot spots (possible cancer) with these changes.
Possible stint for the kidney.
Possible biopsy of the nodule.
Dr. Willadsen says keep my chin up!

Genetic Cancer Results (CDH1)

The results came back November 30th and a family meeting was scheduled to review the details and discuss our plan of action. Mom is positive for "Hereditary Diffused Gastric Cancer" or also known as CDH1. Her offspring have a 50% chance of inheriting this alteration.

This means she got gastric cancer because it was in her genes and passed down. To use a biblical illustration, our bodies are imperfect because we're decedents of once perfect humans who became imperfect. Therefore naturally we all suffer from all sorts of genetic problems, diseases, illnesses and infirmities. So these results are oddly comforting to us because inheriting something that is out of your control is much easier to accept than to wonder what you did wrong.

There is also something interesting to note on the test results which I will quote and attempt to explain.

"Positive, predicted to be deleterious: a heterozygous deletion of C at nucleotide 315 resulting in a frameshift mutation at codon 105 of the CDH1 gene"

The word "deleterious" means "harmful often in a subtle or unexpected way." So Mom is positive for the CDH1 gene but she also has a mutation of this gene.

"To our knowledge, this alteration has not been previously reported in the literature, nor has it been previously detected in our laboratory. This sample is heterozygous for this alternation, having an apparently "normal" or wild type copy of the gene along with the altered copy."

Of course there is much to read and study on these results, the methodology, interpretation etc.

WHAT MAKES A 'TYPE B' AN INDIVIDUAL?

What makes Me Me and You You?
This is the question that is at the heart of the genetic puzzle. It is also central to our exploration of blood types. The key is genetic heritage - the story line of your life. Even though you are living in the 21st century, you share a common bond with your ancestors. The genetic information that resulted in their particular characteristics has been passed on to you.

People who are B blood type have a different set of characteristics than people who are Type O or Type A - they are susceptible to different diseases, they should eat different foods and exercise in a completely different manner. Some believe that personality is influenced by blood type! Dr. D'Adamo, author of the best selling books Eat Right for Your Type and Live Right for Your Type, among others, gives us a blueprint for living in his books. Read on to learn more about the Type B individual.

What Makes Type B Unique
The primary challenges that can get in the way of optimum health for Type B include a tendency to produce higher than normal cortisol levels in situations to stress; sensitivity to the B specific lectins in select foods, resulting in inflammation and greater risk for developing Syndrome X; susceptibility to slow growing, lingering viruses - such as those for MS, CFS, and lupus; and a vulnerability to autoimmune diseases. "If I were to generalize," says Dr. D'Adamo, "I would say that a healthy Type B, living right for his or her own type, tends to have fewer risk factors for disease and tends to be more physically fit and mentally balanced than any of the other blood types." Type B's tended to have a greater ability to adapt to altitude and interestingly, are statistically the tallest of the blood types.

Type B Diet
For Type Bs the biggest factors in weight gain are corn, wheat, buckwheat, lentils, tomatoes, peanuts and sesame seeds. Each of these foods affect the efficiency of your metabolic process, resulting in fatigue, fluid retention, and hypoglycemia - a severe drop in blood sugar after eating a meal. When you eliminate these foods and begin eating a diet that is right for your type, you blood sugar levels should remain normal after meals. Another very common food that Type Bs should avoid is chicken. Chicken contains a Blood Type B agglutinating lectin in its muscle tissue. Although chicken is a lean meat, the issue is the power of an agglutinating lectin attacking your bloodstream and the potential for it to lead to strokes and immune disorders. Dr. D'Adamo suggests that you wean yourself away from chicken and replace them with highly beneficial foods such as goat, lamb, mutton, rabbit and venison. Other foods that encourage weight loss are green vegetables, eggs, beneficial meats, and low fat dairy. When the toxic foods are avoided and replaced with beneficial foods, Blood Type Bs are very successful in controlling their weight.

Handling Stress
When it comes to hormones, type B is closer to type A, producing somewhat higher levels of cortisol. When a Type B is out of balance, this manifests in overreaction to stress, difficulty in recovering from stress, disrupted sleep patterns, daytime brain fog, disruptive to GI friendly bacteria and suppresses immune function. This leads to increased risks for depression, insulin resistance, hypothyroidism and high stress can further exacerbate virtually all health challenges.

Exercise
To maintain the mind/body balance that is unique to Type B's, Dr. D'Adamo recommends that you choose physical exercise that challenges your mind as well as your body. Type Bs need to balance meditative activities with more intense physical exercise. "You tend to do best with activities that are not too aerobically intense, have an element of mental challenge and involve other people." Says Dr. D'Adamo. Excellent forms of exercise for Type B's include tennis, martial arts, cycling, hiking and golf.

The Personality Connection
The connection between blood type and personality has long been studied. In an independent study, Dr. D'Adamo found that most Blood Type B's often described themselves in ways related to the following characteristics: subjective, easygoing, creative, original and flexible. In another study, Type B's scored significantly higher on "intuiting," indicating a preference or sixth sense information; and they scored high on the "intuiting/feeling" combination, indicating that they tend to be insightful, mystical, idealistic, creative, globally-oriented, people-oriented and good at imagining. They also reported that they learned best through listening, then reflecting on and interpreting what they had observed. Perhaps the nomadic life of the steppes contributed to long hours given over to talk as well as ample time for meditation and reflection.

Nothing new to report yet. We're still waiting on the genetic testing results for the stomach cancer gene. Mom's been doing super wonderful and busy as ever. She has to have regular iron and vitamin B shots but seems to be holding strong!

The Starfish

While walking along a beach, an elderly gentleman saw someone in the distance leaning down, picking something up and throwing it into the ocean.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, picking up starfish one by one and tossing each one gently back into the water.

He came closer still and called out, "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"
The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."

The old man smiled, and said, "I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?"
To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."

Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!"

This poster reminds me of our mom. I'm told there's something so very special about a mother that you can't truly understand it until you are one. Since the day you first become a mother your entire life is your children. You fear for all of things that could happen to them and you fear for the choices they could make and what will become of their lives. People tell me it's like your heart is ripped out of you every single day. It's sounds horribly painful and sad but it's actually such beautiful thing. Because of you, a mother, your children came into this world.
Although I don't have children of my own I have such a beautiful example of how a mother should be. I see her beautiful qualities of strength, love, patience, forgiveness, kindness and the list goes on and on really. I love you mom. Thank you so much for everything you do for us all every single day. You are the best! Love Jess :)

Chemo Vacation

It's a Chemo Vacation. I didn't put an exclamation mark at the end of that sentence but I feel like I should have! Should we be celebrating? Honestly every single day is a celebration and a gift! It should be for each one of us, but for those of you like my mom, you don't really know what you have until cancer enters your life. Who cares about the unknown, who cares how many times we've already been on a chemo vacation.... at least the cancer isn't here right now and at least mom doesn't have to be on chemo right now! So I say let's Part-Tay!

August Begins

Mom will be meeting with the doctors who have all "collaborated" and came up with a plan/suggestions for her next step. I'm sure it's a difficult day for her today as the anxiety starts to set it. So I picked one my favorite scriptures to share.

Heart & Soul

Jen and Chris' Wedding was July 23rd. Our beautiful baby girl is all grown up now, married, graduated, working, planting gardens and following her mother's footsteps in home restoration. Chris is pretty good himself and will be such a great husband - they make a wonderful team!

Mom truly put her entire heart, soul and creativity into this wedding. She worked so hard physically and emotionally getting this together. With the help of many awesome and wonderful family and friends they brought her vision to life. It all came together so beautifully and words can not describe how important and special this day was for Jen & Mom, and our entire circle of family and friends.

Thank you so much Mom.

Thank you to all who attended.
and to those we could not invite, we wished you could be there!

2nd Opinion Update

I was waiting until after Jen's wedding to write about Mom's 2nd opinion because there's only so much one can take at a time. So deep breaths and here we go. Mom had a good visit with a doctor in St. Louis who reviewed the past and current situation in great detail. The decision is to wait and not do additional chemo at this time. The scan's and labwork look great and we want to give Mom time to recover from the previous surgery, gain weight, improve health etc. The problem with chemo is when the bad cells are not active the chemo does nothing. The problem with waiting is that it could pop up in places that are not recoverable and this is a very scary place to be. Mom's such a trooper and such a fighter. I am truly so very proud of her every single day. She's very unique in surviving this gastric cancer so they are treating this situation very closely and carefully. I trust Mom's choices and fully support her no matter what. It will be hard but we will all be praying often to stay strong and focused.

Miss 2008

Mom's oncologist just named her "Miss 2008"

If you wonder why? It's because she was diagnosed with gastric cancer in 2008 and no one expected her to survive 2008!

I don't think we'll ever get tired of doctors telling us this because it feels good to fight and win. To keep up the fight is a whole nother story.

During her recent visit with the oncologist it has been recommended and suggested that mom start followup chemotherapy since the removal of her gastric cancer on the ovaries.

The most likely reason why it appeared on the ovaries after the last chemo treatments has much to do with the cancer cells becoming dormit. If any cancer cells are still hiding yet dormit during treatments, we can't destroy them. If mom chooses not do chemo yet she risks any dormit cells growing and spreading very quickly. Pick your poision! Plus she's afraid of losing anymore body parts that she'll be needing. So in her heart she knows this has to be done. We're going to wait until after Chris & Jen's wedding.

The good news is the CT Scan and path reports all look fantastic and there is no cancer that can be found right now. Her oncologist suggested that she get a 2nd opinion before making her decision which always seems to help. I suggest that someone uses those recently removed cancer cells and starts testing them on different types of chemo! No one will ever care about mom as much as we do but it doesn't mean they don't want to help. They just get to clock out at the end of the day and mom doesn't get to clock out from her cancer.

Mom is home from the hospital today! She's relaxing and going to take it easy (right Mom!) and drink LOTS of fluids (Sippy Sip!) and eat good-for-you food! Good job Mom - I'm very proud of you already!

Road to Life

Dr. Icaza (Surgeon from Gastrectomy), Dr. Shaffer (Surgeon from Hysterectomy) and Dr. Willadsen (Oncologist) all 3 came in to monitor, evaluate and visit with Mom today. They told her that today is just a mild bump in the road to recovery. Mom's oncologist appointment was supposed to be today so we'll have to reschedule once she's feeling better. I don't know about Mom, but I'm not ready to talk about chemo again. I want alternatives and I want something good for her - to help lessen the chemo blows. Sure chemo is great if it gets rid of the cancer but the process in not. She's doing a great job but still needs to go easy and make sure she's taking in the right amount of fluids and eating good clean food. If wishes could come true I would have a degree in nutrition (only so that people will finally listen to me) and I would keep Mom's house stocked with healthy organic foods. I told Mom to embrace her inner hippie and think Green, think Organic, but right now she's just thinking about Surviving. So here's to the Road to Life... Here we come!

ER visit

Mom went to ER last night (Thursday 2nd) due to severe abdominal pain/gas. She has a blockage but the doctors feel very certain that it's not an adhesion blockage. They took a 2nd x-ray which shows things are slowing starting to move on their own. I'll update this post tonight when I have more information but for now they are keeping her at the hospital.

Update: She's hanging in there, not in any pain, doctors day the blockage is partial, she's on a liquid diet, walking and sitting up in the chair.

The Top Ten Foods that Fight Free Radicals

1) Blueberries - Especially the wild species, blueberries contain antioxidants which have been found to reduce the risks of some cancers. One study suggests certain compounds present in blueberries have a major effect in reducing the degradation of brain function, as in Alzheimer's disease and other conditions. Other studies have shown that blueberries may help diminish stroke damage, prevent urinary tract infections, and lower cholesterol and lipid levels in the blood, which help alleviate and even reverse signs and symptoms of heart disease. In addition, blueberries are high in manganese as well as vitamin K, and have a very low glycemic load, making it an ideal food for diabetics.

2) Kale - The health benefits of kale are attributed to sulfur-containing phytonutrients. According to research, these substances appear to be able to reduce the occurrence of numerous types of cancers. It is unclear how it works though, but researchers have concluded that such compounds in kale may trigger enzymes in the body that help to offset cancer promoting substances. Kale is also an excellent source of fiber, which is an important consideration for the millions of people who suffer from high cholesterol levels and in helping rid the colon of impurities. Additionally, kale is a good source of calcium, is extremely sparse on calories, has no saturated fat, and does not cause widespread allergic reactions like many dairy products do.

3) Strawberries - Ounce for ounce, strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C, providing a better source of the vitamin than oranges. They provide a healthy dose of folate, potassium, riboflavin and iron. The seeds in strawberries act as a source of insoluble fiber, which can help prevent constipation. Strawberries are also a great source of pectin and other soluble fibers that have been proven to lower cholesterol. They contain bioflavinoids, including red anthocyanin and ellagic acid, which may help prevent some cancers.

4) Spinach - Researchers have identified at least 13 different flavonoid compounds in spinach that function as antioxidants and as anti-cancer agents. The anti-cancer properties of these flavonoids have been shown to slow down cell division in stomach cancer cells and reduce skin cancers. The spinach carotenoid is known to combat prostate cancer.

5) Brussels sprouts - They contain good amounts of vitamins A and C, folic acid and dietary fiber. Brussels sprouts are also believed to protect against colon cancer due to their sinigrin content.

6) Plums - They contain several antioxidants and are known for their laxative effect. This effect has been attributed to various compounds present in the fruits, such as dietary fiber, sorbitol, and isatin. Prunes and prune juice, which come from plums, are often used to help regulate the functioning of the digestive system.

7) Broccoli - It is usually boiled or steamed, but may also be eaten raw. Broccoli is high in vitamin C and soluble fiber, and contains the compound glucoraphanin, leading to an anti-cancer compound called sulforaphane.

8) Beets - The various table beets contain significant amounts of vitamin C in the roots, and the tops are an excellent source of vitamin A. They are also high in folate, as well as both soluble and insoluble dietary fiber and several antioxidants.

9) Oranges - They have long been known to be a rich source of healthy vitamin C, but now some California chemists have discovered that the fruits have some other nutritious chemicals, too. Oranges are rich in compound called citrus limonoids, which have been proven to help battle a number of varieties of cancer, including that of the skin, lung, breast, stomach, and colon.

10) Red grapes - Because of the low incidence of heart disease in France which is attributed to greater consumption of red wine, it is believed that something in the grape helps to lower cholesterol levels in the body and thus slows down the build up of deposits in the arteries. Compounds such as resveratrol (a polyphenol antioxidant) have been discovered in grapes and these have been positively linked to fighting cancer, heart disease, degenerative nerve disease and other ailments.

12:30 -- We met with Dr. Shaffer and he said the surgery went great - Kerry made it through with no problems. The ovarian tumors were spread of the gastric cancer, but were contained and there was no evidence of spread to any surrounding areas. He said she was even pretty free of adhesions -- good news too -- no more adhesion problems!! She will be in recovery for another couple of hours (but knowing Kerry, it will be more like 4 hours) :) We will keep you posted.

Surgery Tomorrow

Mom's surgery is tomorrow. We're trying to pretend that she's just going in for a hysterectomy but it's impossible to ignore the real reason why. It's one of those uneasy situations entering the unknown. No one really knows what to expect, until they open her up. Yes, we're scared, nervous and anxious, but this "Tough Chic" is living post Stage 4 gastric cancer without a stomach! She might be cute and tiny but she's more determined and focused than any of us can begin to imagine. All of your love and support has seriously been so amazing and uplifting. Thank you!

So... if you're wondering why the last 2 posts are very similar it's not a rare occurance that we often think alike. I had to leave it up because it's so funny and cute. Mom got a call this morning from the doctors office explaining that her surgeon had his own medical emergency. All of his surgeries are canceled for the next two days and pushed to next week. Diagnosis

It's taken us a few days to decompress this news. Apparently the previously removed and treated gastric cancer has made it's re-appearance on or inside of the ovaries. This is not ovarian cancer. Mom is scheduled for a surgical hysterectomy May 11th. Our little Jen's college graduation is May 6th so Mom wanted to enjoy and feel good for this very special day. The soonest surgery date was April 20th so putting it off until May 11th shouldn't make a huge difference. This is Mom's choice as she's becoming acquainted with trying to balance life's events with feeling good enough to do them.
Here we go again...

CT Scan Results (4mo Post-Chemo)

It's been a while since we've had much action on the blog since Mom's last CT Scan 4 months ago. It's been about 4 months since her last chemo treatment. Since then she's been recovering so wonderfully as you've read. Mom's been gaining back healthy weight, getting used to her eating/snacking routine and is able to do more with the family, friends and also in the community. Way to go Mom!!! {Snaps for Mommy!}

We're not going to let this most recent CT Scan get us down, but we'll go ahead and let you know what was found. It appears that 2 large masses have decided to become friends with Mom's ovaries. They weren't even suspect at her last scan but have now grown from dots into the size of plums. {I left my notes at work that Mom and I discussed so I'm going freestyle and hope I'm not saying to much} Nonetheless, it is nothing to dismiss as we are taking this very seriously and Mom has an appointment scheduled with an oncologist/ovarian cancer specialist on Monday April 4th. We'll keep you posted as always.

The good new is {#1} we found this early {#2} I honestly can't imagine how any "cancer" could have survived these past treatments only 4 months ago and especially after the surgery/removal {#3} this could easily be an ovarian cyst and {#4} when you've been through what Mom has {fighting off stomach cancer and trying to survive life without a stomach while going through chemo treatments etc.} .... there's nothing we can't face together and with God's help!

Please continue to keep Kerry, our Mother and best friend in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you for all of the love, support, joy and comfort you bring us.

Mom's Surprise Benefit

January 29th we had a surprise party and benefit for mom.
It was in celebration of a new beginning... Cancer-Free!

This benefit was to also help defray the mounding medical bills from her treatments.
It was a complete surprise to Mom and she had such a wonderful time.
I think she's still in shock! She didn't even realize it was even a benefit until Jacie started showing her all of the donation baskets.
Words can not describe how amazing this even was for her.

Busy Happy Little Bee

Mom is gaining weight and feeling great! She's getting her life back and started getting back into her work routine and activities like the watercolor class and rotary club, keeping active with friends and family. When Jen came home from college last weekend all she wanted was a home-cooked meal and Mom was happy to whip up her famous potato soup. Jen said it's so nice having her back and what she meant by that was not having to worry and start the countdown to the next chemo treatment. We're so grateful everyday to have Mom with us. She keeps herself and all of us going with her positive outlook and smiles!

{Some how I don’t think Christmas cards are going to make it out in time so I wanted to put this note on the Blog}

It's Christmas time and with that we think of gift giving, but I want to tell you about a special gift I have received. Cancer ... As you know, in November of 2008 I was diagnosed with stage four gastric cancer, at best maybe 3 to 6 months to live. So, you might think, this is a gift…yes. Cancer a gift, a life change for not only me but my four children as well. Cancer has given us an entire different perspective on life.
Many people don’t take the chance to reflect over the years with such appreciation; to sincerely embrace each precious moment with dear family and friends; and to truly know the power of prayer, the impact of love and support.
The difference one person can make in someone’s life, the difference you all have made in my life. I can’t thank you enough for all the thoughts and prayers, the support during my benefit, the visits, gifts, cards and food. I am here today because of you, and honestly the grace of God.
I am truly blessed and hope to have many years in the future to enjoy family and friends, and give back in return for all I have been given.

Mom had a follow up visit with her surgeon Tuesday, Dr. Icaza
It was a wonderful and encouraging visit! Mom.... fill in the blanks please, you said it so much better than I could!

Mom Comments.....
Dr. Icoza was so happy to see me and Jaclyn, he said I truly looked fantastic. Told me I was a walking miracle, he sees cases of stomach cancer often and never has he seen one with success. He said he was impressed by my positive attitude and the incredible support of family and friends. For follow up he recommended to continue what I’m doing, keep positive, eat well, take vitamins and enjoy every day!

I am Blessed :) that visit brought tears to my eyes and still does every time I think of that day after surgery, the news he laid on us, the strength you kids had, it because of all of you that I was able to fight the fight…thank you!

Life has been very difficult since discovering that my Mom had cancer 2 years ago. It was such a shock because I never thought something like this would never happen to my Mom. I very quickly realized how precious life really is and what's truly important in life. There is a very special bond between a Mother and her Children. I'm happy to be able to say that I've always had that and I know my siblings do also. It's easy because our Mom is so amazing in every way. CT Scan Results

It's All Goooooood!

Mom placed first after finishing her 6 month chemo treatment. The next logical question was "What's next?" and "What do I do now?"

She was concerned about the results from the CT Scan on November 18th and we are happy to report the results are Good, Clear, Gone and Nothing! Her oncologist says that her cancer is in remission at this time and our hope is that it will last a very long time!

It's been a tough few years. We can cry, whine and complain or we can choose to allow this to motivate us and look at life through different eyes. We allowed a bad situation make us stronger and rise to the challenge. It's certainly not easy and it won't be the last of them. Until then we would all do well to continue practicing love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness and self-control because no one can take those away from you but yourself!

It seems like forever ago that Jess created Mom's Blog and wrote the first post titled "The News" beginning with, "After a few months of different tests to figure out what's wrong with mom we finally heard the news, the news we didn't want to hear, things we were afraid to hear. The thoughts run through your mind as you quickly dismiss them, thinking to yourself, no, this can't happen to our mom. Cancer? Stomach cancer? She couldn't even say the words...."

I remember where I was when I heard the news, feeling panic when the surgeon gave her sentence to us straight after finding the worst, the way she looked in the hospital, the funny things she said on her pain medicine, reading her comforting scriptures from the Bible, falling asleep with her at night holding hands, and even doing a "shot" of mineral oil with her for... you know.

I will also never forget how I felt through this experience. I never felt alone with all of the support we had from family, friends, and strangers. And when no one was around I had God to talk to and comfort me. I will never forget the moment Jess, Jacie, Josh and I stood in the hospital and held each other for minutes straight when we weren't so sure we could do it. We gave each other strength to stay positive around Mom when inside we were just as scared as she was. Fortunately, we were usually good at making the best out of the worst and doing anything it took just to see even a slight grin on her face.

Through it all I gained more than what I missed out on. I regained relationships with family that had been missing for too long, confidence that things always find a way of working out, the feeling that we can do nearly anything if we say we can, being able to look on the bright side... no matter what, and learning what is really important in life. Mom now has a relationship with her sister and old friends. They make a point to get her out to have some fun on her good days. You could say they brought the "old" Kerry back. The one full of smiles and surprisingly good dance moves, hehe. I thank them for that no matter how embarrassed I ever looked.

I don't know what it is like to have cancer and I hope I never do. I just know what it is like to help someone get through it. I can't imagine how much courage it takes to keep yourself going each day. To wake up on a treatment day knowing that in hours you are not going to know what is going on, then know that you are going to feel like a train hit you for a week or more. I don't know how Mom prepared herself for any of her treatments or her surgery. Maybe she thought about her children and how she wanted to do it for us because she isn't ready to give up, or maybe she didn't prepare much at all and just did what she had to because she knew what she was supposed to do. However, I do know that I am so glad it is over. And if for some reason that stupid cancer comes back someday, I know I will be ready for it.

My heart goes out to those who have lost a loved one to cancer. I can't imagine... well I try not to imagine what that would be like after such a long and hard fight. My advice is to keep your faith and a positive attitude, because it may be what keeps you alive. To those who have not been touched by cancer, give thanks for your health, pray for strength and healing for those who are still fighting, and pray that my Mom's cancer never comes back.

As Shawn said on the blog after Mom's benefit, "She truly makes this world a better place to live." and I am sure that those who know her feel the same way.

Cleaning Out My Closet

It's out with the old and hopefully some in with the new! On Saturday I helped Mom do some much needed cleaning. She was not feeling well so she lied in her bed while I held up clothes, some from nearly 10 years ago, and waited to hear Goodwill, keep, or save for later. As you can see from the photo above, I heard a lot of Goodwill. Although her closet is thin, she is excited to get back to her ideal weight and go on a shopping spree! We just need to film her wearing some of her old clothes so she can be on What Not To Wear and go to New York and win a $5,000 gift card to do so ;-)

It was just one more way to start over with a clean slate and a fresh new look on life. Goodbye old clothes and cancer cells, hello fabulous!

The Celebration!!

After six months of counting the treatments, the week has finally come! As much as Mom didn't want hear that it was time for treatment week, she is so happy that it will be the last one! Aunt Barb said all of her blood work is normal today and her biopsies came back NEGATIVE from the scope! They set her up for a CT scan on the 18th of November for surveillance and we will get the results on the 23rd so watch for them!

Chemo Day 1 of 2

We're really counting down aren't we! We're so happy we could scream and I guess we're so scared we could scream too. Mom is a bit scared this morning because she said it always hits her differently. Mr. Chemo is both our friend and foe. These last 6 months of chemo have been building and building which makes each treatment harder to face. We know she'll finish strong and make it through and we're always surprised on how much she still does and is able to do. Whatever helps get her up and eating and enjoying life! We think of it has just 2 days but it's quite a different process for Mom. It still doesn't take away the pain and suffering she has to endure. All of the love and smiles, positive thoughts and prayers are helpful. Hang in there Mommy!

Scope Update

Aunt Barb and Jacie went with Mom today for her scope. She has had trouble swallowing sometimes and was concerned with the area the esophagus meets her intestine. I just spoke with Jacie and I am proud to report that everything looks perfect! The doctor said that there is some irritation from acid and gave her some suggestions on helping it.

October is such a beautiful month but we're happy to see it go because we can't wait for November! We're counting down the days and it seems to be all that we can think about.
Mom's last chemo treatment will be November 9th and 10th! She has mixed feelings about it because she knows it will be very difficult but also very exciting all at the same time.
It's not easy and it's not fun but our Mom is #1! Go Momma Go! You can DO IT!

Stomach Cancer Gene

A gene for stomach cancer leads to 11 pre-emptive stomach removals

A genetic testing issue that I first read about yesterday from the early news has reached the U.S. media in full force--a report of the largest family to have preventive surgery to protect themselves from hereditary stomach cancer. The problem appears to have started with Golda Bradfield. She had a rare stomach cancer, and so did at least 6 of her 8 children. These six died of the disease in their 40s and 50s.

Two grandchildren have been diagnosed with stomach cancer and one has died. After learning that David Allen, who died of stomach cancer in 2003, had a specific genetic mutation, the other 17 grandchildren decided to have themselves genetically tested. Six had negative results; 11 were found to have Grandmother Golda's gene.

The cancer in this family is know as hereditary diffuse gastric cancer and is extremely rate. The CDH1 gene mutation was first discovered in 1998 in a large New Zealand family with a history of stomach cancer. About 100 families worldwide have been diagnosed with this cancer. I was unable to find a support group for people with this genetic disease.

Individually, Golda's grandchildren considered the risks-- people with the CDH1 mutation have a 70 percent risk of stomach cancer. All 11 chose to have their stomachs and surrounding lymph nodes removed. At least six were found to be already on their way to having stomach cancer: While the stomachs of all six patients operated on at Standford looked normal before surgery, early tumor growths were found in the tissue removed.

Their lives have changed. Without a stomach, patients typically lose significant weight and must eat smaller meals more often. Some foods they cannot tolerate. But, they are all alive, and know that stomach cancer will not kill them. The long-term effects of stomach removal surgery are still unclear. Researchers around the world are following families with hereditary stomach cancer to find out how the procedure affects quality of life. So far, though effects on the 10 who had surgery earlier were not bad enough to dissuade the last of the 11 to also have the surgery.

Mom just completed her 4th treatment today and will finish it up tomorrow. Now she only has 4 more to go! Treatments are currently spaced 3 weeks apart which hardly seems like enough lately as the recovery time takes a few weeks. Since it's been hitting Mom pretty hard they decided to cut her dose by 15% and have included more anti-nausea drugs in with the mix as well as appetite stimulant and help with heartburn.
Jen's leaving for her Senior year of college on Saturday. It will be a nice break for her but hard on Mom to have her gone. So if anyone wants to help out or come visit Mom please call her, she would love that!

Vacation Time

Mom left Arizona last night and I miss her SO much!

She starts chemo again tomorrow. I wish I could be there to help and make sure she's doing everything but she's a big girl with lots of support and I'm not stressed, no I'm fine. Mom will be just fine. I just hate it, I love it and I hate it. Why does it have to hurt you in order to help you. Anyways, please keep her in your thoughts and prayers this next week is going to be hard but she'll do great, she always does!

Momma's trucking along doing great overall though this whole chemo experience. She's constantly trying to motivate herself, take in her fluids, eat the right foods, gain weight and keeping those levels where they need to be. It's not easy when you have to fight your body to survive but she's doing a wonderful job! So that's my update as far as I know. Mom's coming down to AZ for the weekend to visit me and I'm so excited to see her! Lots to do, gotta go!

Hello!

It's been a while since we've written. I think we're all exhausted, especially Mom. She's hanging in there and doing so well. This is very hard on Mom of course and we have no idea what she's really going through but one thing is for certain. This woman is SO STRONG! I admire my mother and wish I could be more like her. Dealing with this everyday makes my complaints seem so ridiculous in comparison. However, no matter what's going on with us Mom's always there to help support us or just be an ear.

The chemo schedule is for 6 months, Tuesday and Wednesday every 21 days. It's pretty strong stuff so it hits her hard and she has a few days of feeling better, then more treatments. Anyone having gone through chemotherapy knows exactly what I'm talking about and you know how difficult it is to stay motivated. Considering everything Mom's been through in the past 2+ years I think she's handling this so well!

Friends For Hope

My roommates are incredible people to say the least! Paige Kuykendall has been my friend since high school and it's hard to believe that three years ago I didn't even know Jenna Heiden, Lindsey Wolff, or Brittany Harl. These girls have been by my side through so much. They always bring my spirits up when I'm down, even pitched in to give me gas money when I was taking frequent tips driving home, and now they've started Friends For Hope.

Friends For Hope is a fundraiser that my roommates put on for Mom and I with the help of Carmen Mathais and her Dad who donated shirts and koozies. Without me knowing they put all of this together and hosted the fundraiser event at our college home in Edwardsville when I was home visiting mom. They invited almost all of their Facebook friends, asked for at least $5 at the door, and gave them a complementary koozie. In total they raised $1,000 and those who couldn't make it, mailed in donations. They surprised me by showing me a video they made the evening of the fundraiser.

I'm so shocked that $1,000 was donated from a party of college students who are struggling just as much or maybe even worse than my family. Of course they could have gone to a different party that night, or spent their time other ways, but they chose to support me and my mom. Even some who attended had no idea who I was!
Words just can't describe how much we appreciate everything! Thanks to all of those who donated! Thank you all for you generous donations, kind words, love and support. I appreciate it more than you even know. You are all such amazing friends!
